Paragon ID continues to innovate in chip-in-cover (eCover) solutions for eID Documents

Sub Heading
This latest innovation expands Paragon ID’s antenna portfolio for eID applications.

The global electronic identification (eID) market is expanding rapidly. Digital transformation, stronger security requirements, and the need for reliable remote identity verification are accelerating adoption across both public and private services.

Among these applications, electronic passports (ePassports) remain one of the most mature and widely deployed solutions. These documents embed a secure chip that stores the holder’s biographic and biometric data while complying with ICAO standards to ensure interoperability at border control systems worldwide.

Recent national rollouts, such as India’s chip-based ePassport programme, illustrate how governments are modernising travel documents to reduce fraud, accelerate border checks, and support broader digital identity strategies.

The role of chip-in-cover technology

In modern ePassports, the way the chip and antenna are integrated is critical. Chip-in-cover (eCover) designs embed the chip module and antenna directly into the passport cover, ensuring reliable RF communication while maintaining durability over the document’s lifetime.

A new aluminium antenna technology

Paragon ID recently introduced a new aluminium antenna technology for chip-in-cover applications. This innovation uses wafer-based assembly, making the antenna significantly thinner than a traditional module.

The antenna is embedded between two plastic layers, which brings several advantages:

Thinner design for slimmer and more flexible eCovers
Enhanced protection thanks to full encapsulation
No visual imprint through the passport cover for a cleaner finish

Despite its ultra-thin structure, the aluminium antenna delivers the same performance and durability as conventional modules.

The technology is already being deployed in several ePassport programmes, demonstrating its readiness for large-scale production. It also expands Paragon ID’s antenna portfolio, which already includes silver-ink printed antennas and copper-wire antennas.

With three complementary antenna technologies, Paragon ID provides greater flexibility to support the specific requirements of government programmes and document manufacturers.

All Paragon ID eID products are manufactured in Europe and the United States, ensuring a secure and resilient supply chain for customers.
